 श्रीमद्वाल्मीकियरामायणे बालकाण्डे द्विसप्ततितमः सर्गः ॥१-७२॥

श्लोक १ तमुक्तवन्तं वैदेहं विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः। उवाच वचनं वीरं वसिष्ठसहितो नृपम् ॥१󠁿॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: वैसा कहने वाले वीर वैदेह (जनक) राजा से, वसिष्ठजी के सहित महामुनि विश्वामित्र ने यह वचन कहा।
• English Translation: To the heroic king of Videha who had spoken thus, the great sage Vishwamitra, accompanied by Vashistha, spoke these words:

श्लोक २ अचिन्त्यान्यप्रमेयाणि कुलानि नरपुंगव। इक्ष्वाकूणां विदेहानां नैषां तुल्योऽस्ति कश्चन ॥२󠁿॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: हे नरपुंगव! इक्ष्वाकुओं और विदेहों के कुल अचिन्त्य तथा अप्रमेय (अथाह) हैं। इन दोनों कुलों के समान अन्य कोई नहीं है।
• English Translation: "O best of men, the lineages of the Ikshvakus and the Videhas are inconceivable and measureless; none whatsoever is equal to them."

श्लोक ३ सदृशो धर्मसम्बन्धः सदृशो रूपसम्पदा। रामलक्ष्मणयो राजन् सीता चोर्मिलया सह ॥३󠁿॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: हे राजन्! राम और लक्ष्मण के साथ सीता और उर्मिला का यह सम्बन्ध धर्म और रूप-सम्पदा दोनों दृष्टियों से पूर्णतः सदृश (योग्य) है।
• English Translation: "O king, this alliance in terms of dharma and the wealth of beauty is perfectly matching between Rama and Lakshmana, along with Sita and Urmila."

श्लोक ४ वक्तव्यं च नरश्रेष्ठ श्रूयतां वचनं मम। भ्राता यवीयान् धर्मज्ञ एष राजा कुशध्वजः ॥४󠁿॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: हे नरश्रेष्ठ! अब एक और बात कहनी है, उसे आप सुनें। ये जो धर्मज्ञ राजा कुशध्वज हैं, वे आपके छोटे भाई हैं... (विश्वामित्रजी आगे कहते हैं)।
• English Translation: "And O best of men, hear my words which are to be spoken: this righteous king Kushadhvaja is your younger brother..."

श्लोक ५ अस्य धर्मात्मनो राजन् रूपेणाप्रतिमं भुवि। सुताद्वयं नरश्रेष्ठ पत्न्यर्थं वरयामहे ॥५󠁿॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: ...हे राजन्! इस धर्मात्मा राजा कुशध्वज की पृथ्वी पर अप्रतिम रूप वाली दो पुत्रियाँ हैं, जिन्हें हम नरश्रेष्ठ! पत्नी के रूप में माँगते हैं।
• English Translation: "...O king, we ask for the two daughters of this righteous one, who are peerless in beauty on earth, O best of men, to be wives..."

श्लोक ६ भरतस्य कुमारस्य शत्रुघ्नस्य च धीमतः। वरये ते सुते राजंस्तयोरर्थे महात्मनोः ॥६󠁿॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: हे राजन्! वे दोनों कन्याएँ मैं राजकुमार भरत और धीमान शत्रुघ्न— उन दोनों महात्मनों के लिए वरता हूँ (माँगता हूँ)।
• English Translation: "...for the prince Bharata and the wise Shatrughna—I ask for your two daughters, O king, for the sake of those two great-souled ones."

श्लोक ७ पुत्रा दशरथस्येमे रूपयौवनशालिनः। लोकपालसमाः सर्वे देवतुल्यपराक्रमाः ॥७󠁿॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: दशरथ के ये सभी पुत्र रूप और यौवन से संपन्न हैं। ये सभी लोकपालों के समान और देवता के तुल्य पराक्रमी हैं।
• English Translation: "These sons of Dasharatha are endowed with beauty and youth; all of them are equal to the guardians of the world and possess valor comparable to the gods."

श्लोक ८ उभयोरपि राजेन्द्र सम्बन्धेनानुबध्यताम्। इक्ष्वाकुकुलमव्यग्रं भवतः पुण्यकर्मणः ॥८󠁿॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: हे राजेन्द्र! इन दोनों प्रकार के सम्बन्धों से आपके और पुण्यकर्मी इक्ष्वाकु कुल का सम्बन्ध भली-भांति जुड़ जाए।
• English Translation: "O king of kings, let the unperturbed lineage of the Ikshvakus, of you of pious deeds, be bound by alliance in both ways."

श्लोक ९ विश्वामित्रवचः श्रुत्वा वसिष्ठस्य मते तदा। जनकः प्राञ्जलिर्वाक्यमुवाच मुनिपुंगवौ ॥९󠁿॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: वसिष्ठजी की सम्मति के अनुसार विश्वामित्रजी के इस वचन को सुनकर, राजा जनक ने हाथ जोड़कर दोनों मुनिश्रेष्ठों से कहा।
• English Translation: Hearing the words of Vishwamitra in accordance with Vashistha's view, Janaka, with joined palms, spoke to the two foremost of sages:

श्लोक १० कुलं धन्यमिदं मन्ये येषां तौ मुनिपुंगवौ। सदृशं कुलसम्बन्धं यदाज्ञापयतः स्वयम् ॥१०󠁿॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: हे मुनिश्रेष्ठो! मैं अपने इस कुल को धन्य मानता हूँ, जिसके लिए आप दोनों स्वयं ऐसा सदृश कुल-सम्बन्ध जोड़ने की आज्ञा दे रहे हैं।
• English Translation: "I consider this lineage blessed for which you two, O foremost of sages, yourselves command such a fitting family alliance."

श्लोक ११ एवं भवतु भद्रं वः कुशध्वजसुते इमे। पत्न्यौ भजेतां सहितौ शत्रुघ्नभरतावुभौ ॥११󠁿॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "आपका कल्याण हो, ऐसा ही हो। कुशध्वज की ये दोनों पुत्रियाँ शत्रुघ्न और भरत दोनों की पत्नियाँ बनें।"
• English Translation: "May it be so, may you be blessed; let these two daughters of Kushadhvaja both become the wives of Shatrughna and Bharata together."

श्लोक १२ एकाह्ना राजपुत्रीणां चतसॄणां महामुने। पाणीन् गृह्णन्तु चत्वारो राजपुत्रा महाबलाः ॥१२󠁿॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "हे महामुने! एक ही दिन चारों महाबली राजकुमार इन चारों राजपुत्रियों का पाणिग्रहण करें।"
• English Translation: "O great sage, on a single day, let the four mighty-armed princes take the hands of the four royal princesses in marriage."

श्लोक १३ उत्तरे दिवसे ब्रह्मन् फल्गुनीभ्यां मनीषिणः। वैवाहिकं प्रशंसन्ति भगो यत्र प्रजापतिः ॥१३󠁿॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "हे ब्रह्मन्! उत्तराफाल्गुनी नक्षत्र से तीसरे दिन (अर्थात् जिस दिन भग प्रजापति का नक्षत्र हो) ज्ञानी जन विवाह की प्रशंसा करते हैं।"
• English Translation: "O Brahmin, on the day following [Uttara] Phalguni, the wise praise marriage, where Bhaga is the presiding deity."

श्लोक १४ एवमुक्त्वा वचः सौम्यं प्रत्युत्थाय कृताञ्जलिः। उभौ मुनिवरौ राजा जनको वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥१४󠁿॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: ऐसा सौम्य वचन कहकर, राजा जनक ने उठकर और हाथ जोड़कर दोनों मुनिवरों से यह बात कही।
• English Translation: Having spoken such gentle words, rising and joining his palms, king Janaka spoke to the two best of sages:

श्लोक १५ परो धर्मः कृतो मह्यं शिष्योऽस्मि भवतोस्तथा। इमान्यासनमुख्यानि आस्यतां मुनिपुंगवौ ॥१५󠁿॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "आपने मुझपर परम धर्म किया है (बड़ा अनुग्रह किया है), और मैं आप दोनों का शिष्य हूँ। हे मुनिपुंगवियों! इन मुख्य आसनों पर विराजमान हों।"
• English Translation: "You have performed a supreme act of dharma for me, and I am your disciple as well. O foremost of sages, let these principal seats be occupied."

श्लोक १६ यथा दशरथस्येयं तथायोध्या पुरी मम। प्रभुत्वे नास्ति संदेहो यथार्हं कर्तुमर्हथ ॥१६󠁿॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "जैसी यह अयोध्या राजा दशरथ की है, वैसी ही मेरी मिथिला पुरी भी है। यहाँ प्रभुत्व (अधिकार) में कोई संदेह नहीं है, अतः आप यथार्ह (जैसी इच्छा हो) आचरण करें।"
• English Translation: "Just as this city of Ayodhya belongs to Dasharatha, so is this city of mine. There is no doubt regarding authority; you ought to act as is fitting."

श्लोक १७ तथा ब्रुवति वैदेहे जनके रघुनन्दनः। राजा दशरथो हृष्टः प्रत्युवाच महीपतिम् ॥१७󠁿॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: वैदेह (जनक) के ऐसा कहने पर, रघुनन्दन राजा दशरथ ने हर्षित होकर मिथिलापति जनक को उत्तर दिया।
• English Translation: While the Videhan Janaka was thus speaking, the gladdened king Dasharatha, scion of Raghu, replied to the lord of the earth:

श्लोक १८ युवामसंख्येयगुणौ भ्रातरौ मिथिलेश्वरौ। ऋषयो राजसङ्घाश्च भवद्भ्यामभिपूजिताः ॥१८󠁿॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "आप दोनों मिथिलेश्वर भाई असंख्य गुणों से युक्त हैं। आप दोनों द्वारा ऋषिगण और राजसंघ भली-भांति पूजित हुए हैं।"
• English Translation: "You two brothers, lords of Mithila, are endowed with innumerable qualities. The sages and assemblies of kings have been duly honored by you."

श्लोक १९ स्वस्ति प्राप्नुहि भद्रं ते गमिष्यामः स्वमालयम्। श्राद्धकर्माणि विधिवद्विधास्य इति चाब्रवीत् ॥१९󠁿॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "आपका कल्याण हो, आप स्वस्ति प्राप्त करें। अब हम अपने निवास स्थान (आवास) पर जाएँगे और वहाँ विधिपूर्वक श्राद्धकर्म करेंगे।"— ऐसा राजा दशरथ ने कहा।
• English Translation: "May you attain well-being, may you be blessed; we shall go to our dwelling. We will duly perform the Shraddha rites," thus he spoke.

श्लोक २० तमापृष्ट्वा नरपतिं राजा दशरथस्तदा। मुनीन्द्रौ तौ पुरस्कृत्य जगामाशु महायशाः ॥२०󠁿॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: तदनन्तर महायशस्वी राजा दशरथ ने उन नरपति (जनक) से आज्ञा ली और दोनों मुनीन्द्रों (विश्वामित्र और वसिष्ठ) को आगे करके शीघ्रता से अपने स्थान को गए।
• English Translation: Then, taking leave of that king, the highly renowned king Dasharatha, placing those two chief sages in front, departed swiftly.

श्लोक २१ स गत्वा निलयं राजा श्राद्धं कृत्वा विधानतः। प्रभाते काल्यमुत्थाय चक्रे गोदानमुत्तमम् ॥२१󠁿॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: अपने निवास पर पहुँचकर राजा ने विधिपूर्वक श्राद्ध किया और प्रातःकाल तड़के उठकर उत्तम 'गोदान' संस्कार संपन्न किया।
• English Translation: Going to his abode and performing the Shraddha according to scriptural rules, the king, rising early in the morning, performed the supreme Godana (gift of cows) ceremony.

श्लोक २२ गवां शतसहस्रं च ब्राह्मणेभ्यो नराधिपः। एकैकशो ददौ राजा पुत्रानुद्दिश्य धर्मतः ॥२२󠁿॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: राजा दशरथ ने धर्मपूर्वक अपने पुत्रों (राम, लक्ष्मण, भरत, शत्रुघ्न) के कल्याण की कामना से प्रत्येक पुत्र के नाम पर एक-एक लाख— इस प्रकार कुल गो-धन ब्राह्मणों को दान किया।
• English Translation: The king, lord of men, righteously bestowed one hundred thousand cows individually to the brahmins for the sake of his sons.

श्लोक २३-२४ सुवर्णशृङ्ग्यः सम्पन्नाः सवत्साः कांस्यदोहनाः। गवां शतसहस्राणि चत्वारि पुरुषर्षभः ॥२३󠁿। वित्तमन्यच्च सुबहु द्विजेभ्यो रघुनन्दनः। ददौ गोदानमुद्दिश्य पुत्राणां पुत्रवत्सलः ॥२४󠁿॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: पुरुषसिंह एवं पुत्रवत्सल रघुनन्दन दशरथ ने गोदान के अवसर पर सोने के सींगों से मढ़ी हुई, बछड़े वाली, काँसे के दोहनों से युक्त, चार लाख गायें तथा इसके अतिरिक्त बहुत सा धन ब्राह्मणों को दान किया।
• English Translation: Gold-horned, well-conditioned, with calves, and with bronze milking vessels—four hundred thousand cows, along with much other wealth, were given by the best of men, the affectionate scion of Raghu, to the twice-born ones for the sake of the sons' Godana.

श्लोक २५ स सुतैः कृतगोदानैर्वृतः सन्नृपतिस्तदा। लोकपालैरिवाभाति वृतः सौम्यः प्रजापतिः ॥२५󠁿॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: उस समय गोदान संस्कार से संपन्न पुत्रों से घिरे हुए वे राजा दशरथ ऐसे सुशोभित हो रहे थे, मानो लोकपालों से घिरे हुए सौम्य प्रजापति (ब्रह्मा) हों।
• English Translation: Surrounded by his sons who had completed the Godana ceremony, the king at that time shone brightly, like the gentle Prajapati surrounded by the world-guardians.

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीये आदिकाव्ये बालकाण्डे द्विसप्ततितमः सर्गः ॥१-७२॥
