श्रीमद्वाल्मीकियरामायणे बालकाण्डे एकोनचत्वारिंशः सर्गः ॥१-३९॥

१. विश्वामित्रवचः श्रुत्वा कथान्ते रघुनन्दनः । उवाच परमप्रीतो मुनिं दीप्तमिवानलम् ॥१-३९-१॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: कथा की समाप्ति पर रघुनन्दन (रामचन्द्रजी) ने प्रज्वलित अग्नि के समान तेजस्वी मुनि विश्वामित्र के वचन को सुनकर अत्यंत प्रसन्न होकर कहा।
• English Translation: At the conclusion of the narrative, Raghunandana (Sri Rama), having heard the words of sage Vishvamitra who was radiant like a blazing fire, spoke with utmost delight to the sage.

२. श्रोतुमिच्छामि भद्रं ते विस्तरेण कथामिमाम् । पूर्वजो मे कथं ब्रह्मन् यज्ञं वै समुपाहरत् ॥१-३९-२॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "हे ब्रह्मन्! आपका कल्याण हो, मैं इस कथा को विस्तारपूर्वक सुनना चाहता हूँ कि मेरे पूर्वज ने किस प्रकार यज्ञ का अनुष्ठान किया था।"
• English Translation: "May you be blessed, O Brahmana! I wish to hear this entire narrative in detail: how did my ancestor perform the grand sacrifice?"

३. तस्य तद् वचनं श्रुत्वा कौतूहलसमन्वितः । विश्वामित्रस्तु काकुत्स्थमुवाच प्रहसन्निव ॥१-३९-३॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: उनके उस वचन को सुनकर कौतूहल से युक्त विश्वामित्रजी ने काकुत्स्थनन्दन (राम) से मानो हँसते हुए कहा।
• English Translation: Hearing those words, sage Vishvamitra, filled with curiosity, smiled slightly and spoke to Kakutstha (Rama).

४. श्रूयतां विस्तरो राम सगरस्य महात्मनः । शंकरश्वशुरो नाम्ना हिमवानिति विश्रुतः ॥१-३९-४॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "हे राम! महात्मा सगर का इतिहास विस्तार से सुनो। भगवान शंकर के श्वसुर हिमवान नाम से प्रसिद्ध हैं।"
• English Translation: "O Rama, listen in detail to the account of the noble-souled Sagara. The father-in-law of Lord Shiva is widely renowned by the name Himavan (the Himalayas)."

५. विन्ध्यपर्वतमासाद्य निरीक्षेते परस्परम् । तयोर्मध्ये समभवद् यज्ञः स पुरुषोत्तम ॥१-३९-५॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "वे विन्ध्य पर्वत तक पहुँचकर एक-दूसरे को देखते हैं। हे पुरुषोत्तम! उन दोनों पर्वतों के मध्य में वह यज्ञ संपन्न हुआ था।"
• English Translation: "Reaching the Vindhya mountain, they gaze upon each other. In the region between them, O best among men, that sacrifice took place."

६. स हि देशो नरव्याघ्र प्रशस्तो यज्ञकर्मणि । तस्याश्वचर्यां काकुत्स्थ दृढधन्वा महारथः ॥१-३९-६॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "हे नरश्रेष्ठ! वह देश यज्ञ कर्म के लिए अत्यंत प्रशस्त (उत्तम) था। हे काकुत्स्थ! दृढधन्वा और महारथी—"
• English Translation: "O tiger among men, that region is highly praised for sacrificial rites. O Kakutstha, the chariot-warrior Dridhadhanva—"

७. अंशुमानकरोत् तात सगरस्य मते स्थितः । तस्य पर्वणि तं यज्ञं यजमानस्य वासवः ॥१-३९-७॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "—अंशुमान ने सगर की आज्ञा के अनुसार तात (पुत्र/पोत्र रूप में), उस यज्ञ की अश्व-रक्षणादि चर्या की। उस यज्ञ के पर्व (विशेष अवसर) पर, यजमान सगर के उस यज्ञ का (अपहरण करने के लिए) इन्द्र ने—"
• English Translation: "—along with Anshuman acting according to Sagara's wishes, dear child, oversaw the movement of the sacrificial horse. During the course of that sacrifice performed by the patron Sagara, Vasava (Indra)—"

८. राक्षसीं तनुमास्थाय यज्ञियाश्वमपाहरत् । ह्रियमाणे तु काकुत्स्थ तस्मिन्नश्वे महात्मनः ॥१-३९-८॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "—राक्षसी का शरीर धारण करके यज्ञीय घोड़े को चुरा लिया। हे काकुत्स्थ! जब उस महात्मा सगर का वह घोड़ा चुराया जा रहा था—"
• English Translation: "—assuming a demonic form, stole the sacrificial horse. While that horse of the noble-souled monarch was being carried away, O Kakutstha—"

९. उपाध्यायगणाः सर्वे यजमानमथाब्रुवन् । अयं पर्वणि वेगेन यज्ञियाश्वोऽपनीयते ॥१-३९-९॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "—तब समस्त उपाध्यायगणों (ऋतिकों) ने यजमान सगर से कहा— 'इस पर्व के अवसर पर वेगपूर्वक यह यज्ञ का घोड़ा भगाया जा रहा है।' "
• English Translation: "—all the officiating priests said to the patron of the sacrifice: 'This sacrificial horse is being swiftly carried away right during the sacred period.'"

१०. हर्तारं जहि काकुत्स्थ हयश्चैवोपनीयताम् । यज्ञच्छिद्रं भवत्येतत् सर्वेषामशिवाय नः ॥१-३९-१०॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "'हे काकुत्स्थ! इसके चोर को मार डालिए और घोड़े को वापस ले आइए। यदि ऐसा नहीं हुआ तो यह यज्ञ में विघ्न (छिद्र) हो जाएगा, जो हम सबका अल्याण करने वाला होगा।'"
• English Translation: "'Kill the thief, O Kakutstha, and bring the horse back. This constitutes a flaw in the sacrifice, which spells misfortune for all of us.'"

११. तत् तथा क्रियतां राजन् यज्ञोच्छिद्रः कृतो भवेत् । सोपाध्यायवचः श्रुत्वा तस्मिन् सदसि पार्थिवः ॥१-३९-११॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "'अतः हे राजन्! वैसा ही कीजिए जिससे यज्ञ में कोई छिद्र (दोष) न रह जाए।' उपाध्यायों सहित उनके ऐसे वचन को सुनकर उस सभा में बैठे राजा सगर ने—"
• English Translation: "'Therefore, O King, act accordingly so that the flaw in the sacrifice is remedied.' Having heard these words of the priests along with the preceptor, that ruler in the assembly—"

१२. षष्टिं पुत्रसहस्राणि वाक्यमेतदुवाच ह । गतिं पुत्रा न पश्यामि रक्षसां पुरुषर्षभाः ॥१-३९-१२॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "—अपने साठ हजार पुत्रों से यह वचन कहा— 'हे पुरुषर्षभो! मैं राक्षसों की गति (स्थान या बल) को नहीं देख पा रहा हूँ।'"
• English Translation: "—spoke these words to his sixty thousand sons: 'O best among men, I do not see the whereabouts or escape route of these demons.'"

१३. मन्त्रपूतैर्महाभागैरास्थितो हि महाक्रतुः । तद् गच्छत विचिन्वध्वं पुत्रका भद्रमस्तु वः ॥१-३९-१३॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "'मंत्रपूत और महाभाग आप लोगों द्वारा यह महान यज्ञ आरंभ किया गया है। अतः हे पुत्रों! तुम जाओ और उस घोड़े की खोज करो, तुम्हारा कल्याण हो।'"
• English Translation: "'This great sacrifice has been undertaken by fortunate souls like you, purified by sacred mantras. Therefore, go and search for it, my sons, may you be blessed.'"

१४. समुद्रमालिनीं सर्वां पृथिवीमनुगच्छथ । एकैकं योजनं पुत्रा विस्तारमभिगच्छत ॥१-३९-१४॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "'समुद्र रूपी माला से घिरी हुई इस समस्त पृथ्वी का अनुसरण करो। हे पुत्रों! एक-एक योजन के विस्तार को भली-भांति छान डालो।'"
• English Translation: "'Follow the path across the entire earth, which is garlanded by the oceans. O sons, search every single yojana of its expanse.'"

१५. यावत् तुरगसंदर्शस्तावत् खनत मेदिनीम् । तमेव हयहर्तारं मार्गमाणा ममाज्ञया ॥१-३९-१५॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "'जब तक घोड़े के दर्शन न हो जाएं, तब तक मेरी आज्ञा से उस घोड़े के चोर को खोजते हुए पृथ्वी को खोदते जाओ।'"
• English Translation: "'Until the horse is sighted, keep digging the earth in search of that very steed and its thief, in accordance with my command.'"

१६. दीक्षितः पौत्रसहितः सोपाध्यायगणस्त्वहम् । इह स्थास्यामि भद्रं वो यावत् तुरगदर्शनम् ॥१-३९-१६॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "'मैं स्वयं दीक्षा लिये हुए, पौत्र (अंशुमान) और उपाध्यायों के सहित, जब तक घोड़े के दर्शन न हों, यहीं स्थित रहूँगा, तुम्हारा कल्याण हो।'"
• English Translation: "'I, consecrated as the sacrificer, along with my grandson and the assembly of priests, will remain right here until the horse is sighted. May you be blessed.'"

१७. ते सर्वे हृष्टमनसो राजपुत्रा महाबलाः । जग्मुर्महीतलं राम पितुर्वचनयन्त्रिताः ॥१-३९-१७॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "हे राम! पिता के वचनों से प्रेरित (नियंत्रित) वे सभी महाबली राजपुत्र प्रसन्नचित्त होकर पृथ्वी की ओर चल पड़े।"
• English Translation: "O Rama, those all-powerful royal princes, joyful in mind and bound by their father's command, descended upon the earth's surface."

१८. गत्वा तु पृथिवीं सर्वामदृष्ट्वा तं महाबलाः । योजनायामविस्तारमेकैको धरणीतलम् । बिभिदुः पुरुषव्याघ्रा वज्रस्पर्शसमैर्भुजैः ॥१-३९-१८॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "उन महाबली पुरुषर्षभों ने संपूर्ण पृथ्वी पर जाकर भी जब उसे (घोड़े को) नहीं देखा, तब वे एक-एक योजन चौड़ी और लंबी पृथ्वी को अपने वज्र के समान स्पर्श वाले हाथों से खोदने (चीरने) लगे।"
• English Translation: "Having traversed the entire earth and failing to see that horse, those tigers among men—each one measuring a yojana in width—began to cleave the surface of the earth with their arms, which were as formidable as Indra's thunderbolt."

१९. शूलैरशनिकल्पैश्च हलैश्चापि सुदारुणैः । भिद्यमाना वसुमती ननाद रघुनन्दन ॥१-३९-१९॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "हे रघुनन्दन! वज्र के समान भयंकर शूलों और अत्यंत भयानक हलों से जब वसुमती (पृथ्वी) को काटा जाने लगा, तब वह कराह उठी (गंभीर शब्द करने लगी)।"
• English Translation: "O Raghunandana, as the earth was being split by thunderbolt-like spears and exceedingly fierce plows, she let out a loud groan."

२०. नागानां वध्यमानानामसुराणां च राघव । राक्षसानां दुराधर्षं सत्त्वानां निनदोऽभवत् ॥१-३९-२०॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "हे राघव! उस समय मारे जा रहे नागों, असुरों, दुर्धर्ष राक्षसों तथा अन्य जीवों का एक भयंकर आर्तनाद गूंज उठा।"
• English Translation: "O Raghava, there arose a dreadful roar of the serpents, asuras, invincible demons, and other creatures as they were being struck and killed."

२१. योजनानां सहस्राणि षष्टिं तु रघुनन्दन । बिभिदुर्धरणीं राम रसातलमनुत्तमम् ॥१-३९-२१॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "हे रघुनन्दन! हे राम! उन राजकुमारों ने साठ हजार योजन तक पृथ्वी को चीर डाला और उत्तम रसातल (पाताल लोक) तक पहुँच गए।"
• English Translation: "O Raghunandana, O Rama, those princes cleaved the earth down to sixty thousand yojanas, reaching the supreme netherworld (Rasatala)."

२२. एवं पर्वतसंबाधं जम्बूद्वीपं नृपात्मजाः । खननन्तो नृपशार्दूल सर्वतः परिचक्रमुः ॥१-३९-२२॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "हे नृपश्रेष्ठ! इस प्रकार पर्वतों से घिरे हुए जम्बूद्वीप को चारों ओर से खोदते हुए वे राजपुत्र उसकी परिक्रमा करने लगे।"
• English Translation: "O tiger among kings, thus digging up the Jambudvipa, which was crowded with mountains, the royal princes circled all around it."

२३. ततो देवाः सगन्धर्वाः सासुराः सहपन्नगाः । सम्भ्रान्तमनसः सर्वे पितामहमुपागमन् ॥१-३९-२३॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "तदनन्तर गन्धर्वों, असुरों और सर्पों सहित सभी देवता भयभीत और भ्रमित चित्त होकर ब्रह्माजी (पितामह) के पास पहुँचे।"
• English Translation: "Then all the gods along with the Gandharvas, Asuras, and serpents, with bewildered minds, approached Pitamaha (Brahma)."

२४. ते प्रसाद्य महात्मानं विषण्णवदनास्तदा । ऊचुः परमसंत्रस्ताः पितामहमिदं वचः ॥१-३९-२४॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "तब उन सब ने खिन्न मुख और अत्यंत भयभीत होकर उन महात्मा (ब्रह्माजी) को प्रसन्न किया और उनसे यह बात कही—"
• English Translation: "With dejected faces and filled with extreme terror, they propitiated the great-souled Brahma and spoke these words to him—"

२५. भगवन् पृथिवी सर्वा खन्यते सगरात्मजैः । बहवश्च महात्मानो वध्यन्ते जलचारिणः ॥१-३९-२५॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "'हे भगवन्! सगर के पुत्रों द्वारा संपूर्ण पृथ्वी खोदी जा रही है और अनेक महात्मा जलचर जीव मारे जा रहे हैं।'"
• English Translation: "'O Lord, the entire earth is being excavated by the sons of Sagara, and many noble aquatic creatures are being slain.'"

२६. अयं यज्ञहरोऽस्माकमनेनाश्वोऽपनीयते । इति ते सर्वभूतानि हिंसन्ति सगरात्मजाः ॥१-३९-२६॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "'यह हमारा यज्ञ का घोड़ा चुराने वाला है—ऐसा मानकर सगर के ये पुत्र समस्त प्राणियों की हिंसा कर रहे हैं।'"
• English Translation: "'Thinking that the steed thief is hidden here, these sons of Sagara are causing violence to all living beings.'"
