 श्रीमद्वाल्मीकियरामायणे बालकाण्डे त्रिषष्ठितमः सर्गः ॥१-६३॥

श्लोक १ पूर्णे वर्षसहस्रे तु व्रतस्नातं महामुनिम्। अभ्यगच्छन् सुराः सर्वे तपः फलचिकीर्षवः ॥१॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: एक हजार वर्ष पूरे होने पर, व्रत से स्नान करने वाले (दीक्षा पूर्ण करने वाले) महामुनि विश्वामित्र के पास तपस्या का फल देने के लिए सभी देवता आए।
• English Translation: When the thousand years were completed, all the gods approached the great sage, who had bathed after completing his vows, desiring to bestow the fruits of his penance.

श्लोक २ अब्रवीत् सुमहातेजा ब्रह्मा सुरुचिरं वचः। ऋषिस्त्वमसि भद्रं ते स्वार्जितैः कर्मभिः शुभैः ॥२॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: अति महातेजस्वी ब्रह्माजी ने बहुत सुंदर वचन कहा— हे भद्र! तुम्हारा कल्याण हो, तुम अपने द्वारा अर्जित शुभ कर्मों से 'ऋषि' पद को प्राप्त हो गए हो।
• English Translation: The immensely radiant Brahma spoke very pleasing words: "May you be blessed! You have become a 'seer' (Rishi) through your own self-earned auspicious deeds."

श्लोक ३ तमेवमुक्त्वा देवेशस्त्रिदिवं पुनरभ्यगात्। विश्वामित्रो महातेजा भूयस्तेपे महत् तपः ॥३॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: देवेश्वर ब्रह्माजी ऐसा कहकर पुनः स्वर्ग लौट गए। तब महातेजस्वी विश्वामित्र ने और अधिक महान तपस्या शुरू की।
• English Translation: Having spoken thus, the lord of the gods returned to heaven. The immensely radiant Vishwamitra once again performed great penance.

श्लोक ४ ततः कालेन महता मेनका परमाप्सराः। पुष्करेषु नरश्रेष्ठ स्नातुं समुपचक्रमे ॥४॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: तदनन्तर बहुत समय बीतने पर, हे नरश्रेष्ठ! श्रेष्ठ अप्सरा मेनका पुष्कर क्षेत्र में स्नान करने के लिए आगे बढ़ी।
• English Translation: Thereafter, after a long time, O best of men, the supreme apsara Menaka commenced bathing in the Pushkara lakes.

श्लोक ५ तां ददर्श महातेजा मेनकां कुशिकात्मजः। रूपेणाप्रतिमां तत्र विद्युतं जलदे यथा ॥५॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: महातेजस्वी कुशिकात्मज (विश्वामित्र) ने वहाँ रूप में अद्वितीय, बादलों में बिजली के समान चमकती हुई उस मेनका को देखा।
• English Translation: The immensely radiant son of Kushika beheld that Menaka there, peerless in beauty, like lightning amidst the clouds.

श्लोक ६ कन्दर्पदर्पवशगो मुनिस्तामिदमब्रवीत्। अप्सरः स्वागतं तेऽस्तु वस चेह ममाश्रमे ॥६॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: कामदेव के गर्व (प्रताप) के वशीभूत हुए मुनि ने उससे यह कहा— हे अप्सरः! तुम्हारा स्वागत है, तुम मेरे ही आश्रम में निवास करो।
• English Translation: Overpowered by the pride of Kandarpa (Kamadeva), the sage spoke to her: "O apsara, welcome to you; reside here in my hermitage."

श्लोक ७ अनुगृह्णीष्व भद्रं ते मदनेन विमोहितम्। इत्युक्ता सा वरारोहा तत्र वासमथाकरोत् ॥७॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: कामदेव से मोहित हुए मुझ पर कृपा करो, तुम्हारा कल्याण हो। ऐसा कहे जाने पर उस सुंदर अंगों वाली (मेनका) ने वहीं निवास करना शुरू कर दिया।
• English Translation: "Show favor to me, who am infatuated by Madana; may you be blessed." Thus addressed, that shapely lady took up her residence right there.

श्लोक ८ तपसो हि महाविघ्नो विश्वामित्रमुपागमत्। तस्यां वसन्त्यां वर्षाणि पञ्च पञ्च च राघव ॥८॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: हे राघव! उसके वहाँ पाँच और पाँच (यानी दस) वर्ष तक निवास करते-करते विश्वामित्र की तपस्या में बहुत बड़ा विघ्न आ गया।
• English Translation: O Raghava, while she was dwelling there for five and five (ten) years, a great obstacle to Vishwamitra's penance indeed occurred.

श्लोक ९ विश्वामित्राश्रमे सौम्ये सुखेन व्यतिचक्रमुः। अथ काले गते तस्मिन् विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः ॥९॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: विश्वामित्र के उस सुंदर आश्रम में वे वर्ष सुखपूर्वक बीत गए। तत्पश्चात वह काल बीतने पर महामुनि विश्वामित्र...

श्लोक १० सव्रीड इव संवृत्तश्चिन्ताशोकपरायणः। बुद्धिर्मुनेः समुत्पन्ना सामर्षा रघुनन्दन ॥१०॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: ...मानव लज्जित से हो गए और चिंता तथा शोक में डूब गए। हे रघुनन्दन! मुनि के मन में क्रोधयुक्त (या क्षोभयुक्त) बुद्धि उत्पन्न हुई।
• English Translation: ...became seemingly filled with shame and overwhelmed with anxiety and grief. A resentful thought arose in the mind of the sage, O scion of Raghu.

श्लोक ११ सर्वं सुराणां कर्मैतत् तपोऽपहरणं महत्। अहोरात्रापदेशेन गताः संवत्सरा दश ॥११॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: यह सब देवताओं का ही काम है, जो मेरी बड़ी तपस्या को हरने के लिए किया गया है। रात-दिन के धोखे में (समय बीतते-बीतते) दस वर्ष बीत गए!
• English Translation: "All this is the work of the gods, a great act to rob me of my penance. Under the guise of days and nights, ten years have passed."

श्लोक १२ काममोहाभिभूतस्य विघ्नोऽयं प्रत्युपस्थितः। स निःश्वसन् मुनिवरः पश्चात्तापेन दुःखितः ॥१२॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: काम और मोह से अभिभूत हुए मुझ पर यह विघ्न आ उपस्थित हुआ है। वे मुनिवर लंबी साँस लेते हुए पश्चाताप से दुःखी हुए।
• English Translation: "This obstacle has presented itself to me, who was overcome by desire and delusion." Sighing heavily, that foremost of sages became distressed with remorse.

श्लोक १३ भीतामप्सरसं दृष्ट्वा वेपन्तीं प्राञ्जलिं स्थिताम्। मेनकां मधुरैर्वाक्यैर्विसृज्य कुशिकात्मजः ॥१३॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: भयभीत, काँपती हुई और हाथ जोड़े खड़ी अप्सरा मेनका को देखकर कुशिकात्मज (विश्वामित्र) ने मीठे वचनों से उसे विदा किया।
• English Translation: Seeing the terrified apsara trembling and standing with joined palms, the son of Kushika dismissed Menaka with gentle words.

श्लोक १४ उत्तरं पर्वतं राम विश्वामित्रो जगाम ह। स कृत्वा नैष्ठिकीं बुद्धिं जेतुकामो महायशाः ॥१४॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: हे राम! महान यशस्वी विश्वामित्र तपस्या में पक्की (नैष्ठिक) बुद्धि करके और जीतने की इच्छा से उत्तर दिशा के पर्वत की ओर चले गए।
• English Translation: O Rama, the highly renowned Vishwamitra went to the northern mountain, resolving with firm dedication to conquer [his senses/penance].

श्लोक १५ कौशिकीतीरमासाद्य तपस्तेपे दुरासदम्। तस्य वर्षसहस्राणि घोरं तप उपासतः ॥१५॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: कौशिकी नदी के तट पर पहुँचकर उन्होंने दुर्धर्ष (कठिन) तपस्या की। जब वे घोर तपस्या कर रहे थे, तब कई हजार वर्ष बीत गए...
• English Translation: Reaching the banks of the Kaushiki river, he performed formidable penance. As he practiced fierce penance for thousands of years...

श्लोक १६ उत्तरे पर्वते राम देवतानामभूद् भयम्। आमन्त्रयन् समागम्य सर्वे सर्षिगणाः सुराः ॥१६॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: हे राम! उत्तर पर्वत पर उनकी तपस्या देखकर देवताओं को भय उत्पन्न हुआ। तब सभी देवताओं ने ऋषियों के गणों के साथ मिलकर विचार किया।
• English Translation: On the northern mountain, O Rama, fear arose among the gods. Gathering together, all the gods along with hosts of sages consulted one another.

श्लोक १७ महर्षिशब्दं लभतां साध्वयं कुशिकात्मजः। देवतानां वचः श्रुत्वा सर्वलोकपितामहः ॥१७॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "यह कुशिकात्मज विश्वामित्र भली प्रकार से 'महर्षि' शब्द (पद) को प्राप्त करें।" देवताओं के ये वचन सुनकर सर्वलोक के पितामह ब्रह्माजी ने...

श्लोक १८ अब्रवीन्मधुरं वाक्यं विश्वामित्रं तपोधनम्। महर्षे स्वागतं वत्स तपसोग्रेण तोषितः ॥१८॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: ...तपोधन विश्वामित्र से मधुर वाणी में कहा— हे महर्षि वत्स! तुम्हारा स्वागत है, मैं तुम्हारी उग्र तपस्या से बहुत संतुष्ट हूँ।
• English Translation: ...spoke sweet words to the ascetic Vishwamitra: "Welcome, O Maharshi, my child! I am gratified by your fierce penance."

श्लोक १९ महत्त्वमृषिमुख्यत्वं ददामि तव कौशिक। ब्रह्मणस्तु वचः श्रुत्वा विश्वामित्रस्तपोधनः ॥१९॥

श्लोक २० प्राञ्जलिः प्रणतो भूत्वा प्रत्युवाच पितामहम्। ब्रह्मर्षिशब्दमतुलं स्वार्जितैः कर्मभिः शुभैः ॥२०॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: ...हाथ जोड़कर और प्रणाम करके पितामह से यह उत्तर दिया— यदि भगवान (आप) मुझे अपने स्वार्जित शुभ कर्मों से अतुल 'ब्रह्मर्षि' शब्द (पद) प्रदान करते हैं...

श्लोक २१ यदि मे भगवन्नाह ततोऽहं विजितेन्द्रियः। तमुवाच ततो ब्रह्मा न तावत् त्वं जितेन्द्रियः ॥२१॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: ...तभी मैं अपने को विजितेन्द्रिय मानूँगा। तब ब्रह्माजी ने उनसे कहा— तुम अभी तक पूरी तरह से जितेन्द्रिय नहीं हो पाए हो।
• English Translation: "...then indeed am I one who has conquered his senses." Thereupon Brahma said to him: "You are not yet a conqueror of your senses."

श्लोक २२ यतस्व मुनिशार्दूल इत्युक्त्वा त्रिदिवं गतः। विप्रस्थितेषु देवेषु विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः ॥२२॥

श्लोक २३ ऊर्ध्वबाहुर्निरालम्बो वायुभक्षस्तपश्चरन्। घर्मे पञ्चतपा भूत्वा वर्षास्वाकाशसंश्रयः ॥२३॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: ...दोनों हाथ ऊपर उठाकर, निरालंब (बिना किसी सहारे के) रहकर, वायु का भक्षण करते हुए तपस्या करने लगे। गर्मी में पाँच अग्नियों के बीच बैठकर तपस्या की और वर्षा ऋतु में खुले आकाश के नीचे रहे।
• English Translation: ...holding his arms aloft, supporting himself without props, subsisting on air, performed penance. In the summer he sat amidst five fires, and in the rainy season he dwelt exposed to the open sky.

श्लोक २४ शिशिरे सलिलेशायी रात्र्यहानि तपोधनः। एवं वर्षसहस्रं हि तपो घोरमुपागमत् ॥२४॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: शिशिर ऋतु में रात-दिन जल के भीतर शयन करते हुए उन तपोधन ने इस प्रकार एक हजार वर्ष तक घोर तपस्या की।
• English Translation: In the winter season, sleeping inside water day and night, that ascetic thus performed fierce penance for a thousand years.

श्लोक २५ तस्मिन् संतप्यमाने तु विश्वामित्रे महामुनौ। संतापः सुमहानासीत् सुराणां वासवस्य च ॥२५॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: जब महामुनि विश्वामित्र इस प्रकार भीषण तपस्या कर रहे थे, तब देवताओं और इन्द्र को बहुत बड़ा संताप (भय/चिंता) हुआ।
• English Translation: While that great sage Vishwamitra was thus intensely engaged in penance, a very great anxiety arose among the gods and Vasava (Indra).

श्लोक २६ रम्भामप्सरसं शक्रः सर्वैः सह मरुद्‍गणैः। उवाचात्महितं वाक्यमहितं कौशिकस्य च ॥२६॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: तब इन्द्र ने सभी मरुद्गणों के साथ मिलकर अप्सरा रम्भा से वह बात कही जो देवताओं के हित में थी और कौशिक (विश्वामित्र) के अहित में थी।
• English Translation: Indra, along with all the Maruts, spoke to the apsara Rambha words that were beneficial to themselves and detrimental to Kaushika.
