श्रीमद्वाल्मीकियरामायणे बालकाण्डे चतुश्चत्वारिंशः सर्गः ॥१-४४॥

१. स गत्वा सागरं राजा गङ्गायानुगतस्तदा । प्रविवेश तलं भूमेर्यत्र ते भस्मसात्कृताः ॥१-४४-१॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: राजा भगीरथ गंगाजी के पीछे-पीछे समुद्र के पास गए और पृथ्वी के उस पाताल तल में प्रवेश किया, जहाँ उनके पूर्वज भस्म कर दिए गए थे।
• English Translation: Accompanied by Ganga, the king went to the ocean and entered that subterranean depth of the earth where they had been reduced to ashes.

२. भस्मन्यथाप्लुते राम गङ्गायाः सलिलेन वै । सर्वलोकप्रभुर्ब्रह्मा राजानमिदमब्रवीत् ॥१-४४-२॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: हे राम! जब गंगाजी के जल से वह भस्म भली-भांति प्लावित (भीग) गई, तब संपूर्ण लोकों के प्रभु ब्रह्माजी ने राजा से यह कहा—
• English Translation: O Rama, when that heap of ashes was thoroughly wetted by the waters of Ganga, Brahma, the lord of all worlds, spoke these words to the king:

३. तारिता नरशार्दूल दिवं याताश्च च देववत् । षष्टिः पुत्रसहस्राणि सगरस्य महात्मनः ॥१-४४-३॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "हे नरश्रेष्ठ! महात्मा सगर के साठ हजार पुत्रों का उद्धार हो गया है और वे देवताओं की भाँति स्वर्ग को चले गए हैं।"
• English Translation: "'The sixty thousand sons of the noble-souled Sagara have been delivered, O tiger among men, and they have ascended to heaven like gods.'"

४. सागरस्य जलं लोके यावत्स्थास्यति पार्थिव । सगरस्यात्मजाः सर्वे दिवि स्थास्यन्ति देववत् ॥१-४४-४॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "हे राजन्! इस संसार में जब तक समुद्र का जल रहेगा, तब तक सगर के ये सभी पुत्र देवताओं की भाँति स्वर्ग में निवास करेंगे।"
• English Translation: "'As long as the water of the ocean remains in this world, O king, all the sons of Sagara shall abide in heaven like the gods.'"

५. इयं च दुहिता ज्येष्ठा तव गङ्गा भविष्यति । त्वत्कृतेन च नाम्नाथ लोके स्थास्यति विश्रुता ॥१-४४-५॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "यह गंगा तुम्हारी बड़ी पुत्री होगी और संसार में तुम्हारे ही द्वारा रखे गए नाम से प्रसिद्ध होकर रहेगी।"
• English Translation: "'And this Ganga shall be your eldest daughter; renowned in the world, she shall endure by the very name established through you.'"

६. गङ्गा त्रिपथगा नाम दिव्या भागीरथीति च । त्रीन् पथो भावयन्तीति तस्मात् त्रिपथगा स्मृता ॥१-४४-६॥

• हिन्दी/') "इनका नाम 'त्रिपथगा' और दिव्य 'भागीरथी' होगा। तीनों पथों (स्वर्ग, पृथ्वी और पाताल) को पवित्र करने के कारण इन्हें 'त्रिपथगा' कहा गया है।"
• English Translation: "'She shall be known as the celestial Tripathaga and also as Bhagirathi. Because she purifies three paths, she is remembered as Tripathaga.'"

७. पितामहानां सर्वेषां त्वमत्र मनुजाधिप । कुरुष्व सलिलं राजन् प्रतिज्ञामपवर्जय ॥१-४४-७॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "हे मनुजाधिप! राजन्, तुम यहाँ अपने इन सभी प्रपितामहों का तर्पण (जल-क्रिया) करो और अपनी प्रतिज्ञा को पूर्ण करो।"
• English Translation: "'O ruler of men, O king, perform the water-libations here for all these ancestors of yours, and thereby fulfill your vow.'"

८. पूर्वकेण हि ते राजंस्तेनातियशसा तदा । धर्मिणां प्रवरेणाथ नैष प्राप्तो मनोरथः ॥१-४४-७/८॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "हे राजन्! तुमसे पहले अत्यधिक यशस्वी और धर्मात्माओं में श्रेष्ठ तुम्हारे पूर्वज (सगर) इस मनोरथ को प्राप्त नहीं कर सके थे।"
• English Translation: "'O king, prior to you, that extremely illustrious ancestor of yours, the foremost among the righteous, could not attain this desire.'"

९. तथैवांशुमता तात लोकेऽप्रतिमतेजसा । गङ्गां प्रार्थयता नेतुं प्रतिज्ञा नापवर्जिता ॥१-४४-९॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "हे तात! इसी प्रकार संसार में अप्रतिम तेज वाले तुम्हारे पितामह अंशुमान ने भी गंगा को लाने की प्रार्थना की थी, किंतु वे अपनी प्रतिज्ञा को पूर्ण नहीं कर पाए थे।"
• English Translation: "'Likewise, dear child, your grandfather Anshuman, of matchless splendor in this world, prayed to bring Ganga down, but he could not fulfill that vow.'"

१०. राजर्षिणा गुणवता महर्षिसमतेजसा । मत्तुल्यतपसा चैव क्षत्रधर्मस्थितेन च ॥१-४४-१०॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "गुणवान् राजर्षि, महर्षियों के समान तेज वाले, मेरे समान तप करने वाले और क्षत्रधर्म पर स्थित—"
• English Translation: "'The virtuous royal sage, possessing splendor equal to the great rishis, endowed with penance comparable to mine, and steadfast in the duties of the warrior caste—'"

११. दिलीपेन महाभाग तव पित्रातितेजसा । पुनर्न शकिता नेतुं गङ्गां प्रार्थयतानघ ॥१-४४-११॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "—हे महाभाग! हे अनघ! अतितेजस्वी तुम्हारे पिता दिलीप ने भी गंगा को लाने की प्रार्थना की थी, किंतु वे भी उन्हें लाने में समर्थ नहीं हो सके थे।"
• English Translation: "'—O highly fortunate and sinless one, your exceedingly radiant father Dilipa also prayed to bring Ganga, yet he too was unable to bring her down.'"

१२. सा त्वया समतिक्रान्ता प्रतिज्ञा पुरुषर्षभ । प्राप्तोऽसि परमं लोके यशः परमसम्मतम् ॥१-४४-१२॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "हे पुरुषर्षभ! तुमने उस कठिन प्रतिज्ञा को पार कर लिया है (सफल कर दिखाया है) और संसार में परम सम्मानित यश प्राप्त किया है।"
• English Translation: "'You have surpassed that vow, O best among men, and have attained supreme, widely acclaimed renown in this world.'"

१३. तच्च गङ्गावतरणं त्वया कृतमरिंदम । अनेन च भवान् प्राप्तो धर्मस्यायतनं महत् ॥१-४४-१३॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "हे शत्रुओं का दमन करने वाले! तुमने गंगा का यह अवतरण कराया है, जिससे तुमने धर्म के महान स्थान (पुण्य) को प्राप्त कर लिया है।"
• English Translation: "'This descent of Ganga has been accomplished by you, O subduer of foes, and thereby you have attained the supreme abode of righteousness.'"

१४. प्लावयस्व त्वमात्मानं नरोत्तम सदोचिते । सलिले पुरुषश्रेष्ठ शुचिः पुण्यफलो भव ॥१-४४-१४॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "हे पुरुषश्रेष्ठ! नरोत्तम! इस सदा-उचित (पवित्र) जल में अपने आपको स्नान कराओ और पवित्र तथा पुण्य फल के भागी बनो।"
• English Translation: "'Bathe yourself, O best of men, in these eternally fitting waters, O foremost among mortals, and become pure and blessed with the fruit of merit.'"

१५. पितामहानां सर्वेषां कुरुष्व सलिलक्रियाम् । स्वस्ति तेऽस्तु गमिष्यामि स्वं लोकं गम्यतां नृप ॥१-४४-१५॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "अपने सभी प्रपितामहों की जल-क्रिया (तर्पण) करो। तुम्हारा कल्याण हो, अब मैं अपने लोक को जाता हूँ, हे नृप! तुम भी प्रस्थान करो।"
• English Translation: "'Perform the water libations for all your ancestors. May you be blessed; I shall now return to my own realm. You too may depart, O king.'"

१६. इत्येवमुक्त्वा देवेशः सर्वलोकपितामहः । यथागतं तथागच्छद् देवलोकं महायशाः ॥१-४४-१६॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: ऐसा कहकर महायशस्वी देवेश्वर सर्वलोकपितामह ब्रह्माजी जैसे आए थे, वैसे ही देवलोक को लौट गए।
• English Translation: Having spoken thus, the lord of gods, the great-souled Pitamaha of all worlds, returned to the heavenly realm just as he had come.

१७. भगीरथस्तु राजर्षिः कृत्वा सलिलमुत्तमम् । यथाक्रमं यथान्यायं सागराणां महायशाः ॥१-४४-१७॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: महायशस्वी राजर्षि भगीरथ ने सगर के उन पुत्रों के लिए यथाक्रम और विधिपूर्वक उत्तम जल-क्रिया (तर्पण) की।
• English Translation: The highly renowned royal sage Bhagiratha then performed the supreme water rites for the sons of Sagara in proper order and according to scriptural rules.

१८. कृतोदकः शुची राजा स्वपुरं प्रविवेश ह । समृद्धार्थो नरश्रेष्ठ स्वराज्यं प्रशशास ह ॥१-४४-१८॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: जल-क्रिया से निवृत्त होकर पवित्र हुए वे नरश्रेष्ठ राजा अपने नगर में प्रवेश कर गए। उनके सभी मनोरथ सिद्ध हो चुके थे और वे अपने राज्य का शासन करने लगे।
• English Translation: Having completed the water rites and purified himself, that best of men, the king, entered his own city. With all his aims fulfilled, the best of men ruled over his kingdom.

१९. प्रमुमोद च लोकस्तं नृपमासाद्य राघव । नष्टशोकः समृद्धार्थो बभूव विगतज्वरः ॥१-४४-१९॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: हे राघव! ऐसे राजा को पाकर समस्त लोक प्रमुदित हो उठा। सबका शोक नष्ट हो गया, कार्य सिद्ध हो गए और सब लोग ज्वर (चिंता/ताप) से रहित हो गए।
• English Translation: O Raghava, obtaining such a king, the entire world rejoiced. Free from grief, with all aims accomplished, the people became devoid of all feverish anxiety.

२०. एष ते राम गंगाया विस्तरोऽभिहितो मया । स्वस्ति प्राप्नुहि भद्रं ते संध्याकालोऽतिवर्तते ॥१-४४-२०॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "हे राम! इस प्रकार मैंने तुम्हें गंगा का यह सारा विस्तार कह सुनाया। अब तुम्हारा कल्याण हो, संध्या का समय बीत रहा है।"
• English Translation: "'Thus have I related to you, O Rama, this entire detailed account of Ganga. May you attain well-being and be blessed; the evening hour is passing by.'"

२१. धन्यं यशस्यमायुष्यं पुत्र्यं स्वर्ग्यमथापि च । यः श्रावयति विप्रेषु क्षत्रियेष्वितरेषु च ॥१-४४-२१॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: जो इस आख्यान को ब्राह्मणों, क्षत्रियों तथा अन्य वर्णों के लोगों को सुनाता है, यह कथा धन, यश, आयु, संतान और स्वर्ग देने वाली होती है।
• English Translation: This narrative bestows wealth, renown, longevity, progeny, and heavenly bliss. Whosoever makes it heard among the brahmanas, kshatriyas, and other classes—

२२. प्रीयन्ते पितरस्तस्य प्रीयन्ते दैवतानि च । इदमाख्यानमायुष्यं गंगावतरणं शुभम् ॥१-४४-२२॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: उसके पितर प्रसन्न होते हैं और देवता भी संतुष्ट होते हैं। आयु को बढ़ाने वाला यह गंगावतरण का शुभ आख्यान—
• English Translation: —their ancestors are pleased, and the deities are gratified. This auspicious narrative of the descent of Ganga, which lengthens one's lifespan—

२३. यः शृणोति च काकुत्स्थ सर्वान् कामानवाप्नुयात् । सर्वे पापाः प्रणश्यन्ति आयुः कीर्तिश्च वर्धते ॥१-४४-२३॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: —हे काकुत्स्थ! जो कोई भी इसे सुनता है, वह समस्त कामनाओं को प्राप्त कर लेता है। उसके सारे पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं तथा आयु और कीर्ति की वृद्धि होती है।
• English Translation: —O Kakutstha, whoever listens to it attains all their desires. All their sins are destroyed, and their lifespan and glory increase.
