 श्रीमद्वाल्मीकियरामायणे बालकाण्डे षष्ठितमः सर्गः ॥१-६०॥

१. तपोबलहतान् ज्ञात्वा वासिष्ठान् समहोदयान्। ऋषिमध्ये महातेजा विश्वामित्रोऽभ्यभाषत ॥१॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: तप के बल से महोदय सहित वसिष्ठ के उन पुत्रों को नष्ट (शाप से भस्म) हुआ जानकर महातेजस्वी विश्वामित्र ने ऋषियों की सभा में कहा—
• English Translation: Knowing that the sons of Vashistha, along with Mahodaya, had been destroyed by the power of his penance, the highly radiant Vishwamitra spoke in the midst of the rishis:

२. अयमिक्ष्वाकुदायादस्त्रिशङ्कुरिति विश्रुतः। धर्मिष्ठश्च वदान्यश्च मां चैव शरणं गतः ॥२॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "इक्ष्वाकु वंश के ये उत्तराधिकारी 'त्रिशङ्कु' नाम से विख्यात हैं, अत्यंत धर्मिष्ठ और उदार हैं तथा मेरी शरण में आए हुए हैं।"
• English Translation: "'This descendant of Ikshvaku, renowned as Trishanku, is exceedingly righteous and liberal, and he has sought refuge in me.'"

३. स्वेनानेन शरीरेण देवलोकजिगीषया। यथायं स्वशरीरेण देवलोकं गमिष्यति ॥३॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "देवलोक को जीतने की इच्छा रखने वाले ये त्रिशङ्कु अपने इसी शरीर के साथ देवलोक को प्राप्त करें।"
• English Translation: "'Desiring to conquer the world of the gods, let this Trishanku, with this very body of his, go to the divine realm.'"

४. तथा प्रवर्त्यतां यज्ञो भवद्भिश्च मया सह। विश्वामित्रवचः श्रुत्वा सर्व एव महर्षयः ॥४॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "अतः आप सभी मेरे साथ मिलकर इस यज्ञ का अनुष्ठान कराएँ।" विश्वामित्र के इन वचनों को सुनकर सभी महर्षियों ने—
• English Translation: "'Therefore, do you all, along with me, inaugurate this sacrifice.'" Hearing the words of Vishwamitra, all the maharshis—

५. ऊचुः समेताः सहसा धर्मज्ञा धर्मसंहितम्। अयं कुशिकदायादो मुनिः परमकोपनः ॥५॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: —एक साथ मिलकर धर्मयुक्त और उचित वचन कहे—"कुशिक वंश के ये उत्तराधिकारी मुनि विश्वामित्र अत्यंत क्रोधी स्वभाव के हैं।"
• English Translation: —coming together, spoke instantly in accordance with righteousness: "This scion of the race of Kushika, the sage, is exceedingly wrathful."

६. यदाह वचनं सम्यगेतत् कार्यं न संशयः। अग्निकल्पो हि भगवान् शापं दास्यति रोषतः ॥६॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "इन्होंने जो वचन कहा है, वह बिल्कुल सत्य है और इसमें कोई संशय नहीं है कि यह कार्य होना चाहिए। अग्नि के समान तेजस्वी ये भगवान मुनि क्रोधित होकर शाप दे सकते हैं।"
• English Translation: "'Whatever words he has spoken are entirely correct; this undertaking must be carried out without a doubt. For the worshipful sage, who is like fire, will give a curse out of anger.'"

७. तस्माْت प्रवर्त्यतां यज्ञः सशरीरो यथा दिवि। गच्छेदिक्ष्वाकुदायादो विश्वामित्रस्य तेजसा ॥७॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "अतः यज्ञ का अनुष्ठान किया जाए, जिससे इक्ष्वाकुवंशी त्रिशङ्कु विश्वामित्र के तेज से सशरीर स्वर्ग को प्राप्त हो सके।"
• English Translation: "'Therefore let the sacrifice be performed, so that the descendant of Ikshvaku may go to heaven with his physical body through the brilliance of Vishwamitra.'"

८. ततः प्रवर्त्यतां यज्ञः सर्वे समधितिष्ठत। एवमुक्त्वा महर्षयः संजह्रुस्ताः क्रियास्तदा ॥८॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "तत्पश्चात सभी लोग मिलकर यज्ञ का अनुष्ठान करें।" ऐसा कहकर महर्षियों ने उस समय यज्ञ की समस्त क्रियाओं को आरंभ कर दिया।
• English Translation: "'Then let the sacrifice be initiated; do you all superintend it.'" Having spoken thus, the maharshis thereupon commenced those sacrificial rites.

९. याजकश्च महातेजा विश्वामित्रोऽभवत् क्रतौ। ऋत्विजश्चानुपूर्व्येण मन्त्रवन्मन्त्रकोविदाः ॥९॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: महातेजस्वी विश्वामित्र स्वयं उस यज्ञ के मुख्य याजक (पुरोहित) बने और मंत्रों के ज्ञाता अन्य ऋत्विजों ने क्रमानुसार मंत्रों के साथ—
• English Translation: The highly radiant Vishwamitra himself became the principal officiating priest (yajaka) for the sacrifice, and the rituhi priests, well-versed in mantras, sequentially—

१०. चक्रुः सर्वाणि कर्माणि यथाकल्पं यथाविधि। ततः कालेन महता विश्वामित्रो महातपाः ॥१०॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: —कल्प और विधि के अनुसार यज्ञ के सभी कर्म संपन्न किए। इसके पश्चात बहुत समय बीतने पर महातपस्वी विश्वामित्र ने—
• English Translation: —performed all the rites according to the sacred rules and prescribed procedures. Then, after a long lapse of time, the great ascetic Vishwamitra—

११. चकारावाहनं तत्र भागार्थं सर्वदेवताः। नाभ्यागमंस्तदा तत्र भागार्थं सर्वदेवताः ॥११॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: —उस यज्ञ में अपने भाग (हविष्य) को ग्रहण करने के लिए सभी देवताओं का आह्नान किया, किंतु देवताओं ने वहाँ आकर अपना भाग ग्रहण नहीं किया।
• English Translation: —summoned all the gods thither to partake of their sacrificial shares. However, all the deities did not come thither to receive their shares.

१२. ततः कोपसमाविष्टो विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः। स्रुवमुद्यम्य सक्रोधस्त्रिशङ्कुमिदमब्रवीत् ॥१२॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: तब क्रोध से आवेशित होकर महामुनि विश्वामित्र ने स्रुव (यज्ञ का चम्मच) उठाकर अत्यंत क्रोध के साथ त्रिशङ्कु से यह बात कही—
• English Translation: Then, filled with anger, the great sage Vishwamitra, raising the sacrificial ladle and full of wrath, spoke these words to Trishanku:

१३. पश्य मे तपसो वीर्यं स्वार्जितस्य नरेश्वर। एष त्वां स्वशरीरेण नयामि स्वर्गमोजसा ॥१३॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "हे नरेश्वर! मेरे द्वारा स्वयंचित (अपने तप से कमाए गए) तपस्या के वीर्य (बल) को देखो। मैं अभी तुम्हें अपने तेज और बल से सशरीर स्वर्ग पहुँचाता हूँ।"
• English Translation: "'Behold the valor of my penance, earned by myself, O king! Behold, I shall take you to heaven with your physical body by my own spiritual power.'"

१४. दुष्प्रापं स्वशरीरेण स्वर्गं गच्छ नरेश्वर। स्वार्जितं किंचिदप्यस्ति मया हि तपसः फलम् ॥१४॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "हे नरेश्वर! जो स्वर्ग सशरीर प्राप्त करना अत्यंत कठिन है, उस स्वर्ग को तुम प्राप्त करो। मैंने जो कुछ भी तपस्या का फल अपने अर्जित किया है—"
• English Translation: "'Go to heaven, which is hard to attain with the physical body, O monarch. Whatever fruit of penance has been earned by me—'"

१५. राजंस्त्वं तेजसा तस्य सशरीरो दिवं व्रज। उक्तवाक्ये मुनौ तस्मिन् सशरीरो नरेश्वरः ॥१५॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "—हे राजन्! तुम मेरे उसी तप के तेज से सशरीर स्वर्ग को जाओ।" मुनि विश्वामित्र के ऐसा कहने पर राजा त्रिशङ्कु—
• English Translation: "'—O king, go to heaven with your physical body through the brilliance of that [penance].'" When the sage had spoken these words, the king, bearing his physical body—

१६. दिवं जगाम काकुत्स्थ मुनीनां पश्यतां तदा। स्वर्गलोकं गतं दृष्ट्वा त्रिशङ्कुं पाकशासनः ॥१६॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: —हे काकुत्स्थ! मुनियों के देखते-देखते स्वर्ग को चले गए। त्रिशङ्कु को स्वर्गलोक में पहुँचा हुआ देखकर इन्द्र (पाकशासन)—
• English Translation: —went to heaven, O Kakutstha, while the sages looked on. Seeing Trishanku arrived in the heavenly realm, the ruler of the gods (Pakashasana)—

१७. सह सर्वैः सुरगणैरिदं वचनमब्रवीत्। त्रिशङ्को गच्छ भूयस्त्वं नासि स्वर्गकृतालयः ॥१७॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: —समस्त देवताओं के साथ यह वचन बोले—"हे त्रिशङ्कु! तुम नीचे लौट जाओ, तुम स्वर्ग के अधिकारी (निवासी) नहीं हो।"
• English Translation: —along with all the hosts of deities, spoke these words: "O Trishanku, go back down; you are not one whose abode is made in heaven."

१८. गुरुशापहतो मूढ पत भूमिमवाक्शिराः। एवमुक्तो महेन्द्रेण त्रिशङ्कुरपतत् पुनः ॥१८॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "हे मूढ! तुम गुरु के शाप से हत हो, अतः औंधे मुँह (सिर नीचे करके) पृथ्वी पर गिर पड़ो।" महेन्द्र (इन्द्र) द्वारा ऐसा कहे जाने पर त्रिशङ्कु पुनः नीचे गिरने लगे।
• English Translation: "'Struck down by your preceptor's curse, O foolish one, fall to the earth head-downward.'" Thus addressed by Mahendra, Trishanku fell back down,

१९. विक्रोशमानस्त्राहीति विश्वामित्रं तपोधनम्। तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं तस्य क्रोशमानस्य कौशिकः ॥१९॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: और तपोधन विश्वामित्र को पुकारते हुए चिल्लाने लगे कि "मेरी रक्षा कीजिए!" उनके उस आर्त स्वर में चिल्लाने वाले वचन को सुनकर कौशिक (विश्वामित्र)—
• English Translation: —crying out aloud, "Save me!" to the ascetic Vishwamitra. Hearing those words of his as he cried out, Kausika (Vishwamitra)—

२०. रोषमाहारयत् तीव्रं तिष्ठ तिष्ठेति चाब्रवीत्। ऋषिमध्ये स तेजस्वी प्रजापतिरिवापरः ॥२०॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: —अत्यंत क्रुद्ध हो उठे और बोले—"ठहरो! ठहरो!" ऋषियों की उस सभा में वे तेजस्वी विश्वामित्र दूसरे प्रजापति के समान—
• English Translation: —flared up with intense wrath and shouted, "Stop, stop!" In the midst of the rishis, that radiant sage, like a second Prajapati—

२१. सृजन् दक्षिणमार्गस्थान् सप्तर्षीनपरान् पुनः। नक्षत्रवंशमपरमसृजत् क्रोधमूर्च्छितः ॥२१॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: —क्रोध से मूर्च्छित (अत्यंत क्रुद्ध) होकर दक्षिण दिशा की ओर दूसरे सप्तर्षियों की रचना करने लगे और एक नवीन नक्षत्र-मंडल की भी रचना कर डाली।
• English Translation: —creating another group of Saptarshis positioned in the southern direction, and creating another lineage of constellations, swooning with anger—

२२. दक्षिणां दिशमास्थाय ऋषिमध्ये महायशाः। सृष्ट्वा नक्षत्रवंशं च क्रोधेन कलुषीकृतः ॥२२॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: दक्षिण दिशा का आश्रय लेकर, ऋषियों के मध्य में महायशस्वी विश्वामित्र ने नक्षत्र-वंश की सृष्टि करके क्रोध से कलुषित (क्षुब्ध) होकर—
• English Translation: —establishing himself in the southern quarter in the midst of the sages, the highly glorious one, having created the host of constellations and being defiled with anger—

२३. अन्यमिन्द्रं करिष्यामि लोको वा स्यादनिन्द्रकः। दैवतान्यपि स क्रोधात् स्रष्टुं समुपचक्रमे ॥२३॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: —कहा कि "मैं दूसरा इन्द्र बनाऊँगा, अथवा यह लोक बिना इन्द्र का ही रहेगा।" इस प्रकार वे अपने क्रोध के कारण अन्य देवताओं की भी सृष्टि करने लगे।
• English Translation: —[declared]: "I shall create another Indra, or else the world shall be without an Indra." Out of his anger, he even set about creating other deities.

२४. ततः परमसम्भ्रान्ताः सर्षिसङ्घाः सुरासुराः। विश्वामित्रं महात्मानमूचुः सानुनयं वचः ॥२४॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: इसके पश्चात परम संभ्रमित हुए ऋषि-संघ, देवता और असुर महात्मा विश्वामित्र के पास आए और अनुनय-विनय करते हुए यह वचन बोले—
• English Translation: Then, supremely bewildered, the assemblies of rishis, gods, and asuras spoke these conciliatory words to the high-souled Vishwamitra:

२५. अयं राजा महाभाग गुरुशापपरिक्षतः। सशरीरो दिवं यातुं नार्हत्येव तपोधन ॥२५॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "हे महाभाग तपोधन! यह राजा गुरु के शाप से पीड़ित है, अतः यह सशरीर स्वर्ग जाने का अधिकारी नहीं है।"
• English Translation: "'This king, O highly fortunate ascetic, is afflicted by his preceptor's curse. He truly does not deserve to go to heaven with his physical body.'"

२६. तेषां तद् वचनं श्रुत्वा देवानां मुनिपुंगवः। अब्ब्रवीत् सुमहद् वाक्यं कौशिकः सर्वदेवताः ॥२६॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: देवताओं के उन वचनों को सुनकर मुनियों में श्रेष्ठ कौशिक (विश्वामित्र) ने समस्त देवताओं से यह अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण बात कही—
• English Translation: Hearing those words of the gods, the preeminent sage Kausika (Vishwamitra) spoke this momentous speech to all the deities:

२७. सशरीरस्य भद्रं वस्त्रिशङ्कोरस्य भूपतेः। आरोहणं प्रतिज्ञातं नानृतं कर्तुमुत्सहे ॥२७॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "हे देवताओं! तुम्हारा कल्याण हो। मैंने इस राजा त्रिशङ्कु का सशरीर स्वर्गारोहण कराने की प्रतिज्ञा की है, अतः मैं इसे असत्य (झूठा) नहीं करना चाहता।"
• English Translation: "'May good befall you! The ascent of this king Trishanku with his physical body has been promised by me, and I have no desire to make it untrue.'"

२८. स्वर्गोऽस्तु सशरीरस्य त्रिशङ्कोरस्य शाश्वतः। नक्षत्राणि च सर्वाणि मामकानि ध्रुवाण्यथ ॥२८॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "इस त्रिशङ्कु का सशरीर स्वर्ग शाश्वत हो जाए। और मेरे द्वारा बनाए गए ये सभी नक्षत्र भी सदैव स्थिर रहें।"
• English Translation: "'Let the heaven of this Trishanku, possessing his physical body, be eternal. And let all these constellations created by me remain steadfast.'"

२९. यावल्लोका धरिष्यन्ति तिष्ठन्त्वेतानि सर्वशः। यत् कृतानि सुराः सर्वे तदनुज्ञातुमर्हथ ॥३०/२९॥

• हिन्दी मैंने: "जब तक ये लोक टिकेंगे, तब तक मेरे बनाए हुए ये सभी नक्षत्र हर प्रकार से आकाश में स्थिर रहें। हे समस्त देवताओं! आप लोग इसका अनुमोदन (स्वीकार) करें।"
• English Translation: "'As long as the worlds shall endure, let these [constellations] remain in every way. Whatever has been created by me, do you all, O gods, deign to sanction it.'"

३०. एवमुक्ताः सुराः सर्वे प्रत्यूचुर्मुनिपुंगवम्। एवं भवतु भद्रं ते तिष्ठन्त्वेतानि सर्वशः ॥३०॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: ऐसा कहे जाने पर सभी देवताओं ने मुनिश्रेष्ठ विश्वामित्र से उत्तर दिया—"ऐसा ही हो, आपका कल्याण हो! ये सभी नक्षत्र सर्व प्रकार से आकाश में स्थिर रहें।"
• English Translation: Thus addressed, all the gods replied to the preeminent sage: "So be it! May good befall you; let these [constellations] remain in every way."

३१. गगने तान्यनेकानि वैश्वानरपथाद् बहिः। नक्षत्राणि मुनिश्रेष्ठ तेषु ज्योतिःषु जाज्वलन् ॥३१॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "हे मुनिश्रेष्ठ! आकाश में सूर्य-मार्ग (वैश्वानर पथ) से बाहर वे अनेक नक्षत्र उन ज्योतियों के बीच प्रदीप्त होते रहें।"
• English Translation: "'In the sky, outside the path of Agni (the sun's path), let those numerous constellations shine brightly among those luminaries, O best of sages!'"

३२. अवाक्शिरास्त्रिशङ्कुश्च तिष्ठत्वमरसंनिभः। अनुयास्यन्ति चैतानि ज्योतींषि नृपसत्तमम् ॥३२॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "और देवताओं के समान तेजस्वी यह त्रिशङ्कु भी सिर नीचे करके आकाश में स्थित रहे तथा ये समस्त ज्योतियाँ (नक्षत्र) इस नृपसत्तम त्रिशङ्कु की परिक्रमा करती रहें।"
• English Translation: "'And let Trishanku, resembling an immortal, remain head-downward. These luminaries shall follow (accompany/revolve around) this best of kings.'"

३३. कृतार्थं कीर्तिमन्तं च स्वर्गलोकगतं यथा। विश्वामित्रस्तु धर्मात्मा सर्वदेवैरभिष्टुतः ॥३३॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: "इस प्रकार यह त्रिशङ्कु कृतार्थ, कीर्तिमान और स्वर्गलोक को प्राप्त हुए पुरुष की तरह रहे।" धर्मात्मा एवं महातेजस्वी विश्वामित्र की सभी देवताओं ने स्तुति की।
• English Translation: "'Fulfilled in his purpose, glorious, and just as though he had entered the heavenly world.'" The righteous and highly radiant Vishwamitra was praised by all the gods.

३४. ऋषिमध्ये महातेजा बाढमित्येव देवताः। ततो देवा महात्मानो ऋषयश्च तपोधनाः। जग्मुर्यथागतं सर्वे यज्ञस्यान्ते नरोत्तम ॥३४॥

• हिन्दी व्याख्या: ऋषियों की सभा में महातेजस्वी विश्वामित्र से देवताओं ने कहा—"ऐसा ही हो (बाढम्)।" हे नरोत्तम! तत्पश्चात यज्ञ की समाप्ति पर महानत्मा देवता और तपोधन ऋषिगण जैसे आए थे, वैसे ही अपने-अपने लोक को चले गए।
• English Translation: In the midst of the rishis, the highly radiant sage and the gods agreed, saying, "So be it!" Then, O best of men, at the conclusion of the sacrifice, all the high-souled gods and the ascetic rishis departed just as they had come.
